Ponte... nas Ondas!

MODEL SCHOOLS NETWORK “PONTE… NAS ONDAS!” FOR BEST PRACTICES IN INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE

What is the PNO! model?
It is an initiative that has evolved over 30 years, based on inter-school practices involving school radio and communication, cultural heritage, and new technologies, all integrated into the educational context. In 2016, UNESCO accredited Ponte… nas ondas! as an NGO consultant for Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). In 2022, upon the proposal of Portugal and Spain, UNESCO inscribed the “Ponte… nas ondas!” model in its Register of Good Safeguarding Practices for ICH — the first such inscription for both Portugal and Galicia.

What does it involve?
It essentially follows this structure: communication (radio), intangible cultural heritage (ICH), information and communication technologies (ICTs), and heritage education. The main goal is the integration of ICH in schools, using radio and communication as tools to foster the active participation of students.

Why create a network of schools?
This “PNO! model of good practices in ICH” offers an opportunity to integrate Galician-Portuguese ICH as a cross-curricular theme in school projects. Most importantly, it gives a formal framework to the work that is already being done in many schools, in line with the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the ICH, which recognizes education — both formal and non-formal — as a key safeguard measure.

What are the advantages?
The “PNO! model” schools are internationally recognized as they form the first formal network created to ensure the integration of ICH into the education system and to promote active engagement with it.
These model schools receive training on the PNO! methodology and participate in student workshops.
They also take part in activities organized by Ponte… nas ondas! throughout the school year, such as inter-school radio events, ICH collection contests, traveling exhibitions, audiovisual productions, and exchanges with schools in Portugal and other Lusophone countries.
They represent the model in events or conferences where they have the opportunity to showcase their work.

Call from the Regional Ministry of Education

Since the 2023/24 academic year, the Galician ConsellerĂa de EducaciĂłn (Regional Ministry of Education) has issued an annual call for schools to join this network, offering support measures for teachers, including training and financial aid for schools to strengthen activities related to the PNO! model.

PORTUGAL

In Portugal, teacher training has already been accredited by the Scientific Council of the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation through the Teacher Training Centers, and training will begin in the various centers. Some schools are already implementing the “PNO! model” and have been participating in Ponte… nas ondas! activities since the beginning.

Within the framework of Curricular Autonomy and Flexibility (Order No. 5908/2017, of July 5), it is possible to:

  • incorporate projects and activities developed within the school community as an integral part of the curriculum;
  • enrich the curriculum by promoting the Complementary Offer component through the creation of new subjects in basic education;
  • offer Curricular Enrichment Activities (AEC) in basic education, with a focus on recreational, educational, and cultural development.
