He participated in the seventh edition of the PNO radio day.
On the occasion of the death of the former director-general of UNESCO, Ponte…nas ondas! recalls his support for the experience and also for the candidacy of the Galician-Portuguese intangible heritage presented in 2004 along with figures such as José Saramago, Nélida Piñón, Manolo Rivas or Suso de Toro.
In 2001, UNESCO declared the “Year of Dialogue among Civilizations”, for this reason, Ponte…nas ondas! celebrated its 7th edition addressing slavery in the world, specifically with the project “The Slave Route”. Schools from Europe, Africa and America participated and Caetano Veloso, Dulce Pontes, Mercedes Peón and Uxía collaborated. Federico Mayor Zaragoza was one of the experts interviewed by students from two educational centers, one Galician and the other Portuguese. In it, Mayor Zaragoza expressed, among other opinions, support for Ponte…nas ondas! as a radio experience of dialogue and tolerance, and highlighted radio as the most capillary medium, which reaches everyone in different situations.
These were his words:
“I believe it is a very positive experience and I applaud those who had the idea of this initiative, those who are collaborating in its realization, because today the media, you mentioned radio which is, and in my view, will continue to be, the most capillary information system, the one that reaches everywhere, the one that reaches in all situations. There is no doubt that today it’s the one that has the greatest impact: a piece of news given by the radio is truly transmitted at the speed of light, because the power to reach those unreachable by other means, its role of including those excluded by other mechanisms is extraordinary. But you also mentioned the Internet, and therefore I believe that it is an experience that can contribute to this awareness on the part of all the children of the world of one of the historical phenomena that we now have forever; as I say, it cannot be forgotten, but we have to learn the appropriate lessons and we have to ensure that it never happens again.”
